Lori's Story

Lori Mitchell is a native Californian but loves to travel and sketch the world. She grew up in Redondo Beach where she was encouraged to be creative by her mom, the fashion designer. Both of her older sisters are also artists. The whole neighborhood would come over and her mom would set up art school in the garage and they would have art shows in the backyard.

She’s been teaching art since 1996 at elementary schools, high school, college and private school. She teaches students from age 8 to past 80. Along with her teaching she has done several murals around town with students and adults. Most of the murals are to bring people together in a unified effort to create something beautiful for the community.

Lori graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design with a BA in Illustration, which she put to good use. She has illustrated 9 books to date. Her most famous is called Different Just Like Me, which she wrote and illustrated. This book was featured on Oprah and won many awards and honors.

Lori is active in the local art community. She’s vice president of the Society of Illustrators San Diego. She’s also a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. One of her favorite things is to go once a month with the San Diego Sketch crawl group that meets in different locations to draw and laugh and just have fun sharing the creative process.

Along with illustration and teaching Lori has been working with mosaics since 1990 and was featured on HGTV’s Crafters Coast to Coast.  She worked with 350 students to create a 7foot by 4 foot mosaic of the world for Mann Middle School. The students spoke 25 different languages and it was a nice way to bring them all together.

In her free time she likes to travel with her daughter, shop at flea markets and draw unsuspecting people.
